Arnhem and Dutch Pancakes

Dwingeloo, Holland

overcast 14 °C

Today is my last day with Gerry and Peter. I am sad to leave such wonderful and generous people but excited to experience life on another Dutch farm. I'm sure it will be much different then here. I already know there will be three other helpXers and we will all be staying in a big tent on the farm property. With Gerry and Peter, I was the only helper and received my own room and Bathroom. They are also much wealthier then most Dutch house holds since Peter is a financial advisor and Gerry is a well known Horse doctor. They were able to spoil me rotten and they did! I feel so lucky that this was my first stop. In my travels. Yesterday Gerry had no patients (horses) so we did our morning work (mucking out the fields, feeding the animals, and walking Liz) and then headed out on a two hour drive across the country to Arnhem. Earlier in my stay, Gerry mentioned there was a holocaust museum there and that she would take me if I wanted! The day was sunny but cold and windy so we didn't explore the city. It looked so lovely from the car and all the trees and flowers are in bloom on that side of the country. The museum was wonderful and I learned a lot about WWII in Holland. Gerry gave me a tour since she had been there three times. I also finally experienced Dutch pancakes!! We stopped at a very cute Panikoken shop and I ordered one with mushrooms and cheese. They were delicious, a mix between French crepes and American pancakes. They are usually eaten for lunch and are considered to be a heavy meal even though, as an American, I would say they were just the right amount for lunch :) speaking of, time for my cheese (kaas) sandwich!
